Tyre Replacement
Signs your car Tires need to be replaced Immediately
Your car tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, making them a crucial safety component. In Nigeria, where road conditions can be harsh, worn-out tyres can lead to serious accidents. Knowing when to change car tyres can save you from unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.
Here are the key signs that indicate your car tyres need immediate replacement;
1. Low or Worn-Out Tread Depth
The tread on your car tyres provides grip and traction, especially on wet roads. When the tread depth is too low, your car is at risk of skidding, reduced braking efficiency, and poor handling.

How to Check Tyre Tread Depth
- Use a tread depth gauge to measure it. The legal minimum tread depth in Nigeria is 1.6mm, but it’s safer to replace tyres when they reach 3mm.
- Perform the coin test: Insert a coin into the tread grooves. If you can see most of the coin, your tyre needs replacing.
- Look for the tyre tread warning indicators (small rubber bars across the grooves). If they are level with the tread, it’s time for new tyres.
2. Visible Cracks or Bulges on the Tyre Sidewall

Nigeria’s high temperatures and poor road conditions can cause tyre sidewalls to crack or bulge over time. These issues indicate internal damage, increasing the risk of a blowout.
What Causes Tyre Bulging?
- Hitting potholes or road debris
- Overinflated or underinflated tyres
- Manufacturing defects or prolonged wear
If you notice any bulges, do not drive—replace the tyre immediately.
3. Frequent Air Loss or Punctures
Are you refilling your tyre pressure too often? Frequent deflation can be a sign of:
- Slow leaks due to tiny punctures
- Valve stem issues causing air escape
- Tyre bead damage, which prevents a proper seal with the rim
If a tyre keeps losing air, it’s best to replace it instead of patching it repeatedly.

4. Uneven Tyre Wear

Uneven wear can be dangerous and affects vehicle performance. Common causes include:
Suspension problems: Faulty shocks or struts can cause uneven wear.
Misalignment: If one side of the tyre wears out faster, your wheel alignment is off.
Improper tyre pressure: Overinflated tyres wear in the center, while underinflated tyres wear on the edges.
How to Check for Uneven Wear
Run your hand over the tyre surface. If you feel ridges or smooth patches, it’s time for a replacement and wheel alignment.
5. Excessive Vibration While Driving
A smooth ride depends on balanced tyres. If you feel excessive vibrations in the steering wheel or cabin, it could mean:
Worn-out suspension parts
Tyres are out of balance
Damaged tyre belts
Wheel misalignment
Ignoring vibrations can worsen tyre wear and put stress on your car’s suspension.

Car Tyre Lifespan in Nigeria: When Should You Replace Them?
Most tyres have a lifespan of 4-6 years or 50,000 – 80,000 km, depending on usage. However, in Nigeria’s tough driving conditions, it’s best to inspect tyres frequently and replace them earlier if needed.
Check the tyre manufacturing date (printed on the sidewall as a four-digit number). If your car tyre is over five years old, replace it even if it looks fine.
How to Extend the Life of Your Tires
- Check tyre pressure regularly (at least once a month)
- Rotate tyres every 8,000-10,000 km for even wear
- Avoid overloading your car, which puts extra stress on tyres
- Drive carefully and avoid potholes when possible
- Get regular wheel alignment and balancing
Your tyres are essential for road safety. If you notice any of these signs, don’t delay—get new car tyres immediately to avoid accidents and costly repairs. Regular tyre maintenance and early replacement will keep your car running smoothly and safely on the roads.
