Signs your car Tires need to be replaced Immediately

1. Low or Worn-Out Tread Depth
The tread on your car tyres provides grip and traction, especially on wet roads. When the tread depth is too low, your car is at risk of skidding, reduced braking efficiency, and poor handling.
How to Check Tyre Tread Depth
- Use a tread depth gauge to measure it. The legal minimum tread depth in Nigeria is 1.6mm, but it’s safer to replace tyres when they reach 3mm.
- Perform the coin test: Insert a coin into the tread grooves. If you can see most of the coin, your tyre needs replacing.
- Look for the tyre tread warning indicators (small rubber bars across the grooves). If they are level with the tread, it’s time for new tyres.
2. Visible Cracks or Bulges on the Tyre Sidewall
Nigeria’s high temperatures and poor road conditions can cause tyre sidewalls to crack or bulge over time. These issues indicate internal damage, increasing the risk of a blowout.
What Causes Tyre Bulging?

- Overinflated or underinflated tyres

Car Tyre Lifespan in Nigeria: When Should You Replace Them?
Most tyres have a lifespan of 4-6 years or 50,000 – 80,000 km, depending on usage. However, in Nigeria’s tough driving conditions, it’s best to inspect tyres frequently and replace them earlier if needed.
Check the tyre manufacturing date (printed on the sidewall as a four-digit number). If your car tyre is over five years old, replace it even if it looks fine.
How to Extend the Life of Your Tires
- Check tyre pressure regularly (at least once a month)
- Rotate tyres every 8,000-10,000 km for even wear
- Avoid overloading your car, which puts extra stress on tyres
- Drive carefully and avoid potholes when possible
- Get regular wheel alignment and balancing
